Composure
The glass sculptures of Composure explore the sensitive and complex balance of presenting a calm body to the world despite an emotionally overwhelmed mind. As emotional events strike our lives, we must balance internal havoc with exterior control. Our composure is what keeps us feeling the norm within society. Form and design are driving forces within the work. The ancient forms of amphorae were chosen for their resemblance to the shape of a person, utilitarian properties, and diverse historic interpretations. Glass caneworking technique provided the design; chaotic network of colored lines represent emotional instability within the body. When form and design are paired, the elegant shape of the amphora takes on the strength of an impenetrable body, disguising the entangling pattern of color that represents turmoil within. Composure is a study into the connection between design and emotion, using glass as a medium.
